I've heard from other people that there will not be any returning characters from Dying Light 1, but I could be wrong. I just don't know how Kyle Crane can be introduced into this game, unless he is some rampant super zombie that is "destroying" humanity and you get to hunt him down at some point, that would be anticlimatic. From all the characters from DL1, the only ones that might show up again are these two, in terms of lore, they are the only two that could make any sort of sense to return. He was out of the quarantine zone at the end of the following, so it should be obvious that the virus spreads from there. It is also easy to assume that the virus spreading out of harran is linked with Kyle Crane escaping via the sewers. Kyle Crane can make an appearence in this game, he is a special kind of zombie, similiar to the mother perhaps.

And at some point Brecken will touch the subject about Kyle Crane and his unknown fate.
I do think that Brecken could very well become one of the main characters in this game helping you out.
